The #1 Value Parents Should Teach Their Children

I believe the number one value parents should teach their children is how to love and care for themselves. How to hold value in who they are and let that be enough. Teach them their value is not derived by how many hours they work or what possessions they have or how many friends they have. They are enough, in just being themselves. We do not have to mold our children into obedient creatures that obey our every command.

Let kids be kids. Let them enjoy playing and being in their joy – for as long as possible. Do not scold them for experiencing difficult and complex emotions. Allow them to explore and learn how to process what they are feeling without telling them it is wrong. Teach them how and why to make correct decisions on their own, even if it means a longer and harder route for you as a parent. Do not tell them “Because I said so.” That teaches nothing.

Lead by example and show your children how to live with integrity, even if it means a more difficult journey. Teach them how to quiet their minds and listen for that still inner voice. Protect their outside influences in their most formidable years. I believe parents should set boundaries with others in how they interact with their children.

Above all else – ensure your children know they are loved and express that love to them EVERY DAY. Make sure they know that your happiness is not their responsibility. Create a safe place where they can just be. Be the beautiful, brilliant souls they are.
