What Does Your Soul Want?

Decisions are not easy. Especially when our overthinking minds get in the way. Everyone struggles to make decisions at some point in their life. There have been many times when I have struggled with which path to take in life. I know how it feels. You feel like there is something that needs to change, but you have no clue what step to take. You are overwhelmed and stressed. Your mind thinks things through over and over. It is full of doubts and what if’s: What if I make this choice and it turns out bad? Maybe I should just not change anything. At least then I know what to expect.

We don’t get anywhere in life if we refuse to make changes. When the time comes to make a change, I believe there is one question to ask that is paramount: What does your soul want? Not your mind or ego – that illusionary false self that second guesses everything, and wants you to remain safe and comfortable in your cocoon. What is the part of you that connects to a life force bigger than your mind telling you? How does that feel? You will know it’s right when it sits comfortably in your soul, in your body. You can sit with it quietly and allow the feeling to flow through you. The answer may not be logical or rational, but it will be true for you.

It is imperative, however, that you know how to distinguish between the thoughts of your mind and the whispers of your soul. Your mind is loud, it is demanding, chaotic and destructive. It gives you a knot in your stomach and an uncomfortable feeling when you think about acting on it’s requests. On the contrary, your soul is soft – it is calm and gentle. It will quietly give you the guidance of your next step, without revealing to you the entire plan. Your job is then to trust and take that one step – without understanding how everything will play out.

Your mind will try to oppose this action with everything it has. Your mind does not like to not know how everything is going to work out. It wants safety; it does not want you to take the risk of stepping into an unknown path.

I remember being at the point of a breakdown – feeling something had to change. I knew a part of the answer meant leaving my current job, but my mind fought that tooth and nail. “How can you leave such a well paying job?” “What if your new path requires you to move across the country and leave your husband?” “You can’t risk that.” Well, I did – and as a result, I found myself. No, I didn’t have to move across the country and leave my husband. I just had to take that first step to allow new opportunities to come in. I started a business with my husband, and am working on building my own creative career. The journey hasn’t been perfect by any means. There have been struggles, but not the type of struggle that comes when you stifle the callings of your soul.
